Island County Announces Grant Awards For Economic Development Projects

by Helen Price Johnson 22nd August 2019

Each year Island County solicits grant applications from cities, towns and port districts within Island County for the Rural County Economic Development Infrastructure Investment Program. These grants provide partial financing for infrastructure projects supporting the creation and retention of living wage jobs within Island County. The program is funded by a rebate of state sales taxes back to the County. This year a total of $3.8 million over the next 3 years was awarded to the following economic development projects.

Coupeville Pier Restoration Project. The Port of Coupeville was awarded $870,804 to replace deteriorated pier pilings and related support structures at the historic Coupeville Pier. Originally built in 1905, the pier is an iconic landmark on Whidbey Island, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Downtown Coupeville businesses depend heavily on the tourism generated by the pier.

Broadband Planning Study. The County will provide $5,667 to partially fund the local matching requirement for a CERB grant. This study is a needs assessment to better understand the best ways to build out high speed internet infrastructure for underserved areas of Island County. The Port, City of Oak Harbor, Town of Coupeville and Whidbey Telecomm are partners in this project.

Langley Infrastructure Project. The County’s $3 million award is contingent upon the City of Langley voters’ approval of bonds to finance this project. The City’s $7 million infrastructure project will have a positive impact on business development by creating opportunities for sorely needed affordable work force housing.
