Old Time Slow Jam

Come on down for a free Old-time Slow Jam session at the Freeland Library!

Old-time music started in the United States in isolated areas of the rural south, before radio and cars were invented. It comes from a time when if you wanted music, you had to make it yourself. It included ballads, work songs sung in fields, songs sung in church, and square dance music. It has multi-cultural roots from all over the world. Old-time music, often referred to as old-time fiddle tunes, features a fiddle accompanied by other instruments.

We will mostly play fiddle tunes and stay in one key for several tunes before moving to another key. Everyone is welcome to play along! Unlike bluegrass and other forms, there are no solos. We will all play each tune together several times. Feel free to play the melody, harmony, or chords, or explore playing each as we repeat the tunes! The most common keys are D, G, and A. You are welcome to play by ear, or sheet music will be available. Registration will be required.

Skill Level: This is a welcoming jam session: there will be experienced musicians, as well as space for learning musicians – there’s room for all in this circle.

Common acoustic instruments: fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, penny whistle, ukulele, and string bass. Please no amplified instruments.
