Washington grocer pledges to match up to $20,000 in customer donations

to DonorsChoose.org from Feb. 15 to 28

Bellingham, Wash. (February 8, 2017) – Today Haggen announced it has donated more than $130,000 to 373 projects at 166 schools impacting 31,971 students through DonorsChoose.org since November 2015. Now, the company is asking customers to join in their efforts and support classrooms on DonorsChoose.org at check stands from February 15 to February 28. Haggen has pledged to match those donations up to $20,000.

For decades, Haggen has been an active supporter of the schools in the communities surrounding its stores through direct donations, Scrip sales, School Bucks and now through DonorsChoose.org. Founded in 2000 by a teacher, DonorsChoose.org makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need providing tools and experiences needed for a great education.

“After donating $130,000 to projects at 166 schools, we have received thousands of thoughtful, adorable thank-you letters from students across the state of Washington,” said Emily Riggs, Program Development and Promotions Specialist at Haggen. “These donations make a positive impact on our community’s youngest members. We invite our customers to be a part of this incredible giving program.”

Customers can purchase a paper apple for $1, $5, $10, or an amount they designate. The paper apple reads, “I helped support local schools!” and will be on display at each of Haggen’s 15 locations.

In March, store managers will begin with a total of $20,000 to fund projects at their neighborhood schools. The customer donations will be added to that amount allowing for more teachers to receive financial support to enrich their students’ educational experience.
