Cowboys Are My Weakness @ WICA October 9-25
Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (WICA) is thrilled to support Seattle’s Book-It Repertory Theatre in their comeback by presenting a Book-It show here on Whidbey, directed by Book-It’s Artistic Director Myra Platt.
Cowboys Are My Weakness became a hit theater production in Seattle in 1999 where it was originally produced by Book-It Repertory Theatre and performed at the Seattle Rep’s Poncho Theater. Myra Platt’s “pitch perfect” (The Seattle Times) adaptation includes four of Pam Houston’s short stories tied together with a live music score (originally composed and performed by the music duo Edd Key and Theresa Holmes). “How to Talk to a Hunter” offers advice on loving a man who shares more intimacies with his stuffed deer head than his girlfriend. “Selway” is a white-knuckle river raft ride through the dangerous waters of both the Selway River and a new romance. “For Bo” is a light-hearted look at the author’s greatest love: dogs.
The title story, “Cowboys Are My Weakness” explores life with and without those mythical men of the west. Tied together with music directed by the original music duo, Edd Key and Theresa Holmes.

Island Shakespeare Fest Presents Spooky Season Events!
The Turn of the Screw and Tea & True Crime, a Living Podcast
OCTOBER 23-28
Island Shakes presents "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James and adapted for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher at various locations in Coupeville, Oak Harbor and Langley Oct. 23-28. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes
Two children and a governess alone in a remote English estate, but things that go bump in the night might be more than the wind. Who is in danger, the children or the governess, and what did their uncle know before he sent them there? The predator might be prey, but who is the mastermind? A tour de force by two actors, this adaption of Henry James’ story will send shivers down your spine!
Based on the 1898 provocative tale of suspense, horror and repressed sexuality, this adaptation gives the famous story yet another turn of its own. A young governess journeys to a lonely English manor house to care for two recently orphaned children. But she is not their first governess. Her predecessor, Miss Jessel, drowned herself when she became pregnant by the sadistic valet, Peter Quint, who was himself found dead soon after under mysterious circumstances. Now the new governess has begun to see the specters of Quint and Jessel haunting the children, and she must find a way to stop the fiends before it is too late. But one frightening question tortures the would-be heroine: Are the ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination?
Ticket price: $40, $25, $15; Pay What You Will at the door, though we do expect to sell out.
