If you haven’t heard about fascinators, Erin Guthrie will be glad to show you several examples of these decorative head pieces that she has created. She originally began making these for fun and showing them to friends, but many people encouraged her to sell these to people who would enjoy wearing them.
She and her husband of 33 years lived in Kirkland before moving to Whidbey with their two children. They discovered Whidbey Island on an anniversary trip, and decided this is where they wanted to live. They found a fixer-upper on Holmes Harbor, bought the property and began settling into island life.
Her fascinator business is a recent experience for Erin. She originally ran an engineering and consulting business with her husband. She began creating her fascinators in 2021 as a Covid hobby. Her first show was at Freeland Hall for Christmas 2024. She received a lot of positive comments and encouragement to do more.
Fascinators are a retro concept, having been popular with English aristocracy many are still seen on the royals. Erin notes: “I have a lot of fun making them,” She also notes that fascinators are filling a niche market, as more people become aware of her talents and appreciate wearing one of her creations..
One of the factors that has contributed to the growth of her fascinator business is that “People love retro styles”, and it is a niche market. Erin has recently branched out to embellished hates, especially appropriate for garden parties, High Tea, or strolling around Whidbey Island. She notes that every fascinator or hat she creates is original; there are no two that are the same. She also can create custom pieces based upon a specific request from the buyer.
