Meet Marc Pendell & Jonathan Crisp, Owners of Grocery Outlet at Ken's Corner

by Carolyn Tamler 13th July 2026

Marc Pendell has been in retail for 40 years, but his favorite job was as the Nature Director of a scout summer camp!  The reason he stayed in retail so long is because he loves to serve the community and train others to reach their potential.  Marc has lived in San Francisco, Tokyo, New Orleans, Augusta GA, Seattle, New York City and Lancaster PA.  He loves football, movies, hiking, the beach and spending time with Jonathan and his son.

Jonathan Crisp has worked in retail for 4 years.  Previously he was in property management as well as a custodian of records at a medical office.  Jonathan grew up in East Orange, New Jersey and has lived in Tennessee and Pennsylvania. Jonathan has a strong sense of community and even worked in the apartment complex where he grew up.  Jonathan likes to travel, eat at new restaurants, watch podcasts and absolutely despises traffic.

Grocery Outlet differs from standard supermarkets through its opportunistic buying model. The chain buys surplus stock, packaging updates, and overruns from manufacturers at deep discounts. This allows them to sell name-brand groceries for 40% to 70% less than traditional stores.

Their inventory changes constantly. If a manufacturer changes a logo, Grocery Outlet buys the old boxes. Once an item sells out, it might never come back. Each independently owned store is run by a local family. Owners can stock unique items that fit their local neighborhood.

They have a famous "NOSH" aisle. This stands for Natural, Organic, Specialty, and Healthy foods. It is a great place to find cheap organic food. While most items are closeouts, they also stock regular fresh items like meat and milk at low daily prices.

Grocery Outlet uses a unique Independent Operator Model rather than a traditional franchise system. The owners do not pay standard franchise fees or purchase their initial inventory upfront. Instead, the company retains ownership of the building and stock while the owners manage the storefront as an independent business entity.
