Tanner Hansen is building a reputation on South Whidbey as an exceptionally versatile fitness professional. Whether you are looking for expert personal training, guided yoga instruction, or invigorating water aerobics, Tanner is now offering these services at the Island Athletic Club.
Before making Whidbey Island his home, Tanner gained a wealth of experience through extensive travel and dedicated study. Born in Alaska and raised in Bend, Oregon, he later moved to Tucson, Arizona, to care for his grandmother, who lived with dementia. During this time, he began practicing Hatha and Yin yoga, eventually falling in love with the discipline and transitioning into a teaching role.
Drawn by Whidbey Island’s climate and community, Tanner moved to the area in 2001. After working four years at Bayview Gardens, he transitioned into the fitness industry full-time. Recognizing his expertise in yoga, the Island Athletic Club invited him to begin teaching in May 2025. To further broaden his ability to support clients, Tanner earned his Personal Trainer certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) shortly thereafter.
Today, Tanner is a full-time staff member at the Island Athletic Club, where he leads two Yin yoga classes, two Hatha classes, and two water aerobics sessions each week. He is deeply committed to helping clients sustain functional independence, noting: "I want to help people in their golden years stay mobile and give them the autonomy to go about their daily lives with strength and grace."
If you are interested in scheduling a private yoga session, a personalized strength training program, or learning more about water aerobics, please check in at the Island Athletic Club front desk. Island Athletic Club is located at 5522 S. Freeland Avenue in Freeland; phone number is 360-331-2582.
