This wonderful class from Artist and Art Educator Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys of ArtMaranth Mobile School combines artistic instruction with cultural and historical context.
Metal tooling, also called “repousse” ,“metal embossing” or “repujado” in Spanish is a type of low-relief sculpture in which tools are used to create a design on metal. This centuries old practice can be found in artworks including armor plates from ancient Greece, King Tut's mask, and Mexican tin art designs.
Participants will learn basic techniques of metal embossing using conventional kitchen items to create a unique piece of art. In this class, we will explore the different metal tools to add textures onto borders and corners. Once the design is embossed, we’ll proceed to add color using sharpies. As we work, we'll discuss the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, the significance of altars and objects to decorate such as sugar skulls, candles and flowers.
This class is appropriate for teenagers and adults from 13 to 200 years old.
